Happy St. Patricks Day

I was taking a shower, thinking about what green shirts I have to wear for St. Patricks day.  I knew I had a long-sleeved green sweater, but that did not appeal to me.  Especially since I am going to get drinks.  So I started thinking about this really cute pink shirt with hearts that I love wearing.  Then it hit me.  I have a green shirt with hearts on it!  I bought it FOUR YEARS AGO (Yes Jen, Sam, Deanna & Ally, you read that correctly, four years ago).

During junior year of college, a few of my friends decided to go up to Canada for part of our spring break. St. Patricks day fell on one of the days we happened to be in Canada.  I remember two days before the holiday me and my friends were in the underground mall searching for green shirts to wear.  It was almost time for the mall to close, and we were rushing around this huge store.  I found a shirt that was totally me and bought it.  Finally St. Patrick's day came around, and I got to wear the shirt, under my sweatshirt and jacket.  I guess I didn't realize that tank tops in the middle of March in Canada was a bad idea.  But I still had a wicked cute shirt.

After St. Patrick's day I didn't really give much thought to the shirt.  I wore it a few times to the bars, and then that was it.  However, during senior year, my friends and I (most of the same girls) went to San Diego.  I brought that green tank with me for Saint Patricks day, thinking "San Diego will be warm, I can show off my shirt and look cute".  I was wrong again!!  The morning of St. Patricks day, my friends and I got dressed in our regular green shirts and went on with our day.  No one told us that people in San Diego do not wear green during the day of St. Patricks day.  We walked around with our green, pointing out all the other tourists in their green clothing.  During the night, we went out in an area with a lot of bars, and FINALLY people were wearing green.  But again, it was super cold that night, and I had to bundle up in my fabulous green shirt.
San Diego!!!

I am excited to wear my shirt again this year, especially since it is so warm out, but the shirt comes with happy and sad memories.  I am lucky to say that I am still best friends with three of the girls I went away with both years.  I am still friends with one of the girls, but not as close with her.  And the fifth girl I do not even speak to anymore.  In college you hope that you will always be close with your friends, but slowly you begin to realize how wrong you were.  I've learned first hand how quickly people can change, especially when you're graduating and starting new  paths in your lives.  As my friendships were falling apart, I realized how lucky I was (and still am) to have all my other friends in my lives.  There is a reason why I have drifted from those few people, yet my relationships with my other friends have gotten stronger.

It's time to go put on that green shirt with hearts, and celebrate St. Patricks day.  I hope that a year from now I will be celebrating with old friends and new friends.  Enjoy drinking!
