1. Lois Long
http://commons.wikimedia.org
Before we had Carrie Bradshaw, The New Yorker had Lois Long aka "Lipstick".  Hired at the age of 23, Lois Long brought insight to the New Woman of the mid 1920's.  Lipstick would spend her nights drinking, dancing and dining at speakeasy's in New York City.  She would stay out all hours of the night, and then go into the office in the mornings, still drunk, and write her columns.  Lois Long allowed people to see what the new "normal" was for the new, middle-class woman who embodied the flapper's spirit and style.  (Information taken from Flapper: A Madcap Story of Sex, Style, Celebrity, and the Women Who Made America Modern by Joshua Zeitz)

2. Neil Patrick Harris as Hedwig
www.eonline.com
Move over Barney Stinson, Neil Patrick Harris' best role yet is playing Hedwig in "Hedwig and the Angry Inch".  NPH was born for this play.  I saw it Saturday night, and could not believe how beautiful, magical, loving, inspiring this show was.  Hedwig is performed as a conversation between her and the audience.  There is a band onstage to support her, and interacts throughout the show.  Hedwig is the story for a man who became transgender to marry another man during the late 1980's in East Germany.  We go through the ups and downs that Hedwig experienced, singing, laughing and crying with her.  I highly recommend everyone see this play before it closes!

4. F. Scott Fitzgerald

At the moment, I am reading Flapper: A Madcap Story of Sex, Style, Celebrity, and the Women Who Made America Modern and Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald.  Both books speak about F. Scott Fitzgerald, and I have fallen in love.   I know he spent way too much money that he didn't have, but the man sure knew how to party.  Fitzgerald would go out every night, partying with the flappers, hanging out with other writer friends, and then turn around and write brilliant novels!  And according to both books, Fitzgerald was very persistent with Zelda.  Who doesn't want that?

  1. The Night Circus

I just reread The Night Circus for the third time.  Every time I read this book, I fall more and more in love with the characters, and Le Cirque Des Reves.  The circus suddenly arrives with no warning, and is only open from sunset to sunrise.  The reader is able to experience the circus through the eyes of visitors, workers, and the two people who run the circus-- Marco and Celia.  We learn that the circus is the host of a competition between Marco and Celia, and by the end, only one of them will be left standing.  But what happens if they try to work together instead of against each other?

2. Face Time

Recently a friend and I have been having "Face Time Dates".  It's so much easier than talking on the phone. I pay attention to my friends a lot better (since they would know if I was multi-tasking).  It's also fun to see their expressions when talking about certain topics.

3. Five Year Engagement- Cookie Monster and Elmo Scene

4. Sara Bareilles- "I Choose You"

5. Parenthood

It has been already been a week since the season finale of "Parenthood", and I am still not over the episode.  It was jam packed with love, happiness, and drama.  My week is not complete without hanging out with the Braverman clan.  Each character is so relatable, and the show reminds me to love the life I have, and to get excited for the life that I will have in future.

you want me to cook!?

Carrie Bradshaw had the right idea: the kitchen should be used for storing clothes, shoes and handbags, not for cooking.  That's why we have phones.  Tonight I tried to attempt 2 goals.  The first was to push myself to do something outside of my comfort zone.  The other goal was to learn how to cook.  I succeeded in going outside of my comfort zone, however my cooking skills might have gotten worse, rather than improving.

I've seen people make chicken cutlets a million times.  Chicken, eggs, and breadcrumbs.  Easier said than done.  I'm not sure where I went wrong--probably when I decided that it would be a good idea to cook alone.  I cleaned the chicken, put oil in the pan, and dipped the chicken into the correct flavoring.  And then I put it in the pan.  Big mistake.  The oil went flying out, stinging me all over my arms.  Then I smelled the burning.  The bottom of the chicken was starting to burn, and as I went to flip it over, the oil kept jumping onto my skin again.  My first two pieces of chicken were un-edible.  I threw those pieces away, and decided to try again.  I cut my chicken in half to make it thinner, and then went through the whole process again.  This time the chicken cooked all the way through, and didn't burn as much.  I considered that a success, until I sat down to eat.  The chicken had no taste, and the breadcrumb part kept falling off.

People thought I never learned how to cook because I wasn't interested.  That's not true at all.  I am terrified of raw meat.  Senior year of high school we took a cooking class.  One day we had to make Sloppy Joe's.  Did you know that to make Sloppy Joe's you need to stick your hand into the raw meat and squish it up?  I put on my rubber gloves, stuck my hands into the meat, squeezed and then screamed.  It was the most disgusting feeling ever.  From that day on I refused to touch raw meat--packaged or not.

But now I am 26 years old, and I thought brave enough to try and cook chicken.  Going outside of my comfort zone? Check!  And it was exhilarating.  I'm proud that I can finally say that I've attempted to cook raw meat.  Learn how to cook?  Epic failure.  Not sure what I did wrong, but it didn't taste right.  I'm sending out a public warning now, if I cook it, don't eat it.

(101/1001)

Last week a sorority sister told me about a challenge she gave herself almost three years ago: 101 goals to complete in 1001 days.  I was immediately fascinated by this idea and started writing down my own goals.  Once I had a few of my own, I went onto my friends blog (http://lostdrgnfly.wordpress.com/101in1001/) and looked through her goals.  I will admit I stole some of her ideas.  Now that I had my 101 goals, I decided to look up the date in 1001 days.  July 10, 2016.  MAJOR PANIC ATTACK!!!  In 1001 days I will be 29 years and 7 days old.  It's not that I am scared of getting older, it's just the idea that so much is going to be different in 1001 days.  Who knows where I am going to be physically and mentally in my life.  I tossed and turned all night thinking I needed more life changing goals.  Thankfully when I woke up the next morning relaxed and confident with what I wrote.  On July 10, 2016, I will (hopefully) have a better grip on life, of who I am and what my passions are.  I've reread my list dozens of times getting excited to attempt to complete each goal.  I am also excited about the stories I will have.  Here is to the next 1001 days:  I hope every single day is filled with excitement, laughter, love and courage to be the person I am going to be in 1001 days.
